O’Brien, RN, MSN, is one of CHASE HUNTER GROUP’S Strategic Partners and Clinical Experts.  She received her Masters Degree in Nursing from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ and has been certified in Advanced Administration by the American Nurses Association, Washington DC for over 15 years.  Barbara became a Nursing Executive and Wharton Fellow in 1999.
 
As a healthcare executive with experience in community, teaching, tertiary level, freestanding and multi-hospital systems, she has been responsible for perioperative services, nursing, respiratory therapy, education, case management, infection control, performance improvement, transportation, and phlebotomy. Barbara has taught in a community college and private universities and applied for and secured grants.  Her strongest asset is being a visionary, transformational leader who thrives on multifaceted challenges while providing a creative and innovative environment. Her environment supports change, cost efficiency, and high quality patient care.

 

Recognized nationally and internationally for her leadership outcomes and published in nursing journals, Barbara is an active member of healthcare organizations and a presenter on topics including leadership, performance improvement, and community outreach.

As a nursing leader, Barbara was Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, Paterson, NJ a leading teaching multi-hospital system. She was responsible for 681-acute beds, a budget of $92 million, and more than 1,400 employees. She took this organization from crisis state to recipient of the American Nurses Association’s Magnet Recognition Award in less than three years. During this time, she also redesigned processes and flattened the management structure saving over $3 million while increasing staff levels and patient care providers at the bedside. Prior to that, Barbara was Assistant Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer at Beth Israel Medical Center, North Division, New York City, NY, responsible for 229-acute care beds; and merged a community and a teaching hospital into a multi-hospital system.

Barbara lives in New Jersey with her husband John. They have three grown children. In her free time she enjoys creative cooking, reading, gardening and traveling.
